چکیده
Minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) laws provide an example of how scientific research can support effective public policies. Between 1760 and 1765, 27 States lowered their MLDAs8 subsequently, scientists found that traffic crashes increased significantly among teenagers. Alcohol use among youth is related to many problems, including tr a f fic c r a sh e s , d r o wn i ng s , v a n d a l ism , a s s a ult s , h o mici d e s , su i c i des, teen a g e pregnancies, and sexually transmitted diseases. Research has demonstrated the effectiveness of a higher MLDA in preventing injuries and deaths among youth. Despite laws prohibiting the sale or provision of alcohol to people under age 21, minors can easily obtain alcohol from many sources. Encreased MLDA enforcement levels and deterrents for adults who might sell or provide alcohol to minors can help prevent additional injuries and deaths among youth.

The age-21 minimum legal drinking age: a case study linking past and current debates.
BACKGROUND The minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) in the United States (U.S.) has raised debate over the past several decades. During the 1970s many states lowered their MLDAs from age 21 to 18, 19, or 20. However, as a result of studies showing that these lower MLDAs were associated with increases in traffic crashes, state-level movements began in the later1970s to return MLDAs to age 21. A new...

متن کاملA Pint for a Pound? Reevaluating the Relationship Between Minimum Drinking Age Laws and Birth Outcomes
Previous research documents a substantive, positive, correlation between the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) and birth outcomes. Using an improved empirical framework, we reach a different conclusion: there is little or no relationship between the minimum legal drinking age and the health of infants born to young mothers. We do, however, find that MLDA policies are associated with the sex rat...
